Ultralearning: nine principles for intense self-directed learning
Ultralearning is Scott Young's name for aggressive, self-directed learning projects. His book organises it into nine principles.
- Metalearning: first map how the subject is learned and what it contains. See why, what, how.
- Focus: protect long, undistracted blocks.
- Directness: learn by doing the thing you want to be able to do.
- Drill: isolate your weakest component and attack it.
- Retrieval: test yourself to learn (retrieval practice).
- Feedback: seek honest, specific feedback, even when it stings.
- Retention: plan for forgetting (spaced repetition).
- Intuition: build deep understanding by explaining and probing (self-explanation).
- Experimentation: try different approaches and keep what works for you.
